Start of research
For this week’s work my main goal is to gather information about how to film a skating montage and what makes a good one as I had never seen or filmed one before but I also might find a little bit of information about the history of skate film. For this section of my project I need to use my skills of finding and retrieving information. I also need to make sure that the source that I was using was reliable. I will need to research the history of skate film to be able to give a brief introduction. Then I will need to research what camera angles are popular in skate film culture and why and finally I will need to research what equipment is used to give the look of a skate video.
I used a variety of sources for my research in the form of a video and a website some were more reliable that others but heres all the sources i used:
http://www.youtube.com. (n.d.). What it Takes to Film a Skateboarding Video Part – Chapter 1. [online] Available at: https://youtu.be/P27OhW9GSro.
http://www.youtube.com. (n.d.). How to Film Skateboarding with a Fisheye Lens Part 1 | Stationary Angles | Tactics. [online] Available at: https://youtu.be/I7RHURzu9Lw.
Tony hawk (2AD). Tony Hawk’s 14 Tips for Filming a Skate Video. [online] masterclass articles. Available at: https://www.masterclass.com/articles/tony-hawks-tips-for-filming-a-skate-video#tony-hawks-14-tips-for-filming-and-editing-skate-videos
SurferToday.com, E. at (n.d.). How to film a skateboarding video. [online] Surfertoday. Available at: https://www.surfertoday.com/skateboarding/how-to-film-a-skateboarding-video.
The first youtube video i linked above was not helpful or reliable to me as the video focuses more on tips for the skaters and it only showed professional skaters which was unrealistic. The next video below helped give me an understanding of how to film the angles and it also clearly showed me how to keep myself and the camera safe when filming. The best source I came across was the tiny and easy points of what to do and wrote about the points in detail allowing me to understand clearly. Finally the last link I put was not very helpful as it was too simplistic and didn’t give much detail even with pictures.
My research went smoothly as I didn’t come across any problems apart from some of the sources being unreliable.
In my opinion this week’s work went unsuccessful as i needed to add more to my research the next week and didn’t meet the planned deadline i had as i lost track of time and found it hard to find reliable sources. I have learned from this to work more efficiently when researching and to plan what i’m going to search before writing.

Research
For this week’s work my goal was to finish off research and possibly begin filming by the end of the week. For this section of my fmp I need to use a pc with access to the internet and a camera. I also need to use my skills of finding/retrieving information and filtering out unreliable sources. Another skill I need is to memorize the different camera angles I’ve learned (which I have already practiced in previous projects). My research for this week will be based around the equipment of my project like filming and lenses etc.
This week I researched what angles are popular. I also needed to research the equipment used usually in skate film and some of the effects used. After finding out this I needed to search for budget friendly alternatives to use in my project. My research taught me that the sony vx 1000 was the most popular and effective camera that most skaters used and still use to this day. My research also taught me what the best aspect ratio for skate film is. I used my previous research to revise before going out to film.
Here are some of the sources i used this week:
Jenkem Magazine. (2018). TRACING THE HISTORY OF SKATEBOARDING’S MOST FAMOUS CAMERA. [online] Available at: https://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2018/07/13/tracing-history-skateboardings-most-famous-camera/.
http://www.youtube.com. (n.d.). The History of Skateboarding’s Favorite Camera. [online] Available at: https://youtu.be/tvzwCPoXclQ
Janney, R. (2019). The History of Skate Videography: The Unsung Hero of Cinéma Vérité. [online] The Beat: A Blog by PremiumBeat. Available at: https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/skate-videography-unsung-hero-cinema-verite/.
http://www.youtube.com. (n.d.). CHEAP VX1000/2000 ALTERNATIVE. [online] Available at: https://youtu.be/L1vAjQNSfdE.
The first source linked was unreliable as it gave too much information about the technical parts of the camera and the history and I was looking for the effect that it gives and why it is popular.
The second source linked was a good video and gave me a good understanding of the history but it did not benefit my research as the content didn’t have what I was looking for .
The third source linked was very good and reliable but it only had a tiny bit of information useful for this part of my research.
After realizing the camera and even the alternative was out of my budget I was disappointed and I thought that i would have to film using my iphone camera with no lens until i came across a lens that you can attach to your phone so i instantly ordered that.
Finally the last source was good as he described what effect the camera has and an alternative but unfortunately the alternative was out of my budget.
After finishing my research i headed out to film but unfortunately i was robbed at knifepoint for my phone so i was left with no way of filming so i ordered a new phone quickly and left the filming for the next week.
Unfortunately for this section of my project i did not achieve my goals as i couldn’t film so next week i will schedule to film again.

filming
My main goal for this week’s work is to start filming and get a good chunk of my desired clips filmed and expand my research.
For this week I will need my lenses, my skates, access to the internet and my phone.
I will also need to use the angles that I learned in my previous research.
For this week I researched a little bit further into the history of skate film and began my filming.
I used a mix of videos and websites for my research sources but i found that some of the websites gave me a clearer understanding.
Here are all the sources i used:
Janney, R. (2019). The History of Skate Videography: The Unsung Hero of Cinéma Vérité. [online] The Beat: A Blog by PremiumBeat. Available at: https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/skate-videography-unsung-hero-cinema-verite/.
http://www.youtube.com. (n.d.). ESPN Skate on Film – The History & Importance of Skate Videos – Seg 1. [online] Available at: https://youtu.be/kg_kvWUd76I
Wikipedia. (2022). Skate video. [online] Available at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skate_video#:~:text=4%20Further%20reading-
As you can see I didn’t use many sources because all of the questions I was curious about were answered in these links. The best source I found out of these is the first one linked as this website is packed with detailed yet simplified information that’s easy to understand and full of useful information. The least useful source was the video linked as it was too detailed with information I didn’t need.
This week my phone and attachable lens came so i needed to research how to attach it.
This was the video i used:
How to use the iPhone X Clip n.d., http://www.youtube.com, viewed 5 June 2022, <https://youtu.be/UA2Xpj2d1Aw>.
This video was simple and reliable.
This week I also began filming. Here’s how it went.
Day 1 shoot.
Attempted to start my first day of filming on Friday but I was robbed at knifepoint. I had no way of filming and no money so I went back home and ordered a new phone instantly to ensure I have as much time to focus on my production as possible. my phone didn’t come until tuesday so i had to postpone my filming until then, in the meantime however i went out and re bought the lenses for my phone then on tuesday i proceeded with my filming. Filming that day was not enjoyable as in the previous evening i sprained my ankle on a run and had no other days to film before college but i didn’t let this stop me but when i got to southbank i realized that the skatepark was wet so not many people were there at a busy time. Even though a lot got in my way I overcame my problems and I managed to film one person and got a few clips for the day. What I didn’t realize until my filming was that barely any of the skaters wanted to be filmed so the next time I film again I will get alot of clips of me and my friend. Overall I see this day as unsuccessful but it could’ve been worse and I’m also grateful that I learned alot from this day like how to keep your camera low while skating and what spots look good on camera.
I personally see this weeks work as successful even though the filming wasn’t as i came into alot of problems and even though there was alot stopping me i managed to complete my research and get a few clips that were good.
21st may – 28th may
Filming
This week is going to be completely for filming but as I have a lot of time I will use some days to practice filming by getting shots of random things I’m inspired by.
I will need my lenses, my skates and my phone camera. I will also need to experiment with different lenses and angles and I might need to look back at my previous research to refresh my knowledge on the angles I planned to shoot.
The first 4 days of the week was spent experimenting and testing and then the clips I planned to film will be filmed on the weekend.
The previous research I did will help me alot with this section of my project but for this week I don’t need any internet sources.
I came into the same problem that I had previously where a lot of the skaters didn’t want to be filmed. To resolve this issue I got there early and stayed until late to increase the possibility of having someone to film. I also called one of my friends and asked to get clips of him.
Another problem I ran into while filming is that I kept getting in the way of other skaters while filming. After realizing this I made sure that I stayed right behind the skater that I’m filming to avoid any disruption to other people. After all my filming was done I uploaded the clips to my pc and I was finished with filming.
This week I also gathered primary research to decide what song to use. I did this by asking strangers skating “what song are you listening to” and I gathered 10 songs to choose from including one from a grime artist by the name of sbk.
I believe this week’s work was successful as I set a goal to have all my clips done for this week and I got it done. I also had knowledge from the previous filming that I did.
Here is a summary of my last day filming
I planned to enter college, sign in and then leave immediately to proceed with my filming but I ran into a problem as I had left my camera and phone at home and my parents locked the house. There wasn’t much I could do in this situation but I improvised by getting other bits of work done during college. Then headed home to get my equipme
I got a few clips of me and my friend cruising on my board so that i have backup clips in case no one wants to be filmed. After that we headed down to the southbank skatepark and I began filming. This day was a little bit disappointing as not many people wanted to be filmed but I found 2 people who happened to be very good at skateboarding. Overall I see this day as successful as I applied the knowledge gained from the last shoot and research and got some good clips with a lot of potential.
28th may – 5 th june
Editing
This week is the last week I have to do my project and my main goal for this week is to complete my editing and evaluate my project. For this week i will need da vinci editing software and some effects from the internet and to get the effects transitions and titles i want.i will also need to experiment with different colors and video settings. In addition to this I will need to research any effects that I want to use in my film.
I planned to be experimenting with different presets to find a common theme for my video then I decided to mix different themes together depending on the vibe that I’m getting from the clip resulting in the video having a vast array of different colors and themes.
I needed to find out how to reverse a clip and how to keyframe effects so i watched these videos below to assist me :
http://www.youtube.com. (n.d.). HOW TO REVERSE A CLIP IN DAVINCI RESOLVE – Resolve 16 Tutorial for beginners. [online] Available at: https://youtu.be/jp4OG0VRG84
http://www.youtube.com. (n.d.). KEYFRAMES in the COLOR PAGE | DaVinci Resolve 16 Tutorial. [online] Available at: https://youtu.be/ITQbB2jMx0k.
http://www.youtube.com. (n.d.). KEYFRAME Basics in DAVINCI RESOLVE 16 | Beginner Tutorial. [online] Available at: https://youtu.be/-_GfKvTENzE
Apathy from the one at the bottom which was too long aloof the videos i watched was very reliable as it gave a short and easily understandable explanation.
Overall i believe the editing went well as although i wanted to got for a specific look a switched it up and done my own thing letting my creativeness do the work.
